The Matt Heisler Fund has been created to celebrate and honor the life of Matt Heisler
Matt was tragically killed in a house fire on March 17th, 2014 while attending college at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Matt loved hunting, fishing, Lakeville North Football, Fighting Sioux Hockey, The Cowboys, his family, many friends and being the life of the party!
When Matt was 16 he made the selfless decision that if life was ever taken from him that he would donate his organs in order to help others. As many as 60 people have benefited from Matt’s generous gifts of life and his legacy will live on forever.
Motivated by Matt’s passion for life and giving spirit, the mission of this fund is to promote organ and tissue donation worldwide through Donate Life and The Gift of Life House in Rochester, MN. Matt’s legacy will also live on in the form of 2 annual scholarships given to a male and female student athlete at Lakeville North High School.
Matt Heisler was a 2011 Lakeville North graduate who played cornerback for the Panthers football team for three years. Matt’s team first attitude and dedication to outwork his counterparts to see playing time on Friday nights will always be remembered. He was a best friend to all who knew him, the life of the party and above all else a beloved son and big brother. Matt lost his life in a tragic house fire on March 17th, 2014 while attending the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
Before Matt’s death, he made the courageous decision that if life was ever taken from him that he would donate his organs in order to help others. Through Donate Life and HCMC in Minneapolis, Matt’s generous gifts helped up to 60 people improve their lives. Matt’s heart went to a 70 year old man waiting 112 days, his liver to a 61 year old man waiting for 413 days, a kidney to a 46 year old woman waiting 1,497 days, and his other kidney went to a 56 year old woman waiting 1,467 days. Matt was also able to donate the gift of sight and tissue to help others which makes him a true hero to all of those he was able to touch in his short life.
Matt’s legacy of giving back to others will live on through The Matt Heisler Scholarship which will be awarded annually to graduating Lakeville North Senior athletes. Many of the attributes that made Matt special will be used to award two $2,500 scholarships each spring to Lakeville North athletes that will be attending college the following fall. If you would like to apply for the Matt Heisler Scholarship fund please go to the Lakeville North High School home page under the Career Center tab and then hit Scholarships to apply.
Additionally, proceeds from Matt’s fund each year will also be donated in Matt’s name to support Donate Life MN and the Gift of Life House at Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN.
Thank you for remembering Matt and for considering to follow his example in becoming a life giving organ and tissue donor if you are not one already.
